Le Maître dit : « Les barbares de l'Est et du Nord, qui ont des princes, sont moins misérables que les nombreux peuples de la Chine ne reconnaissant plus de prince. »

Couvreur III.5.

The anarchy of Confucius's time.
The Master said, "The rude tribes of the east and north have their princes, and are not like the States of our great land which are without them."

Legge III.5.

The Master said, 'Barbarian tribes with their rulers are inferior to Chinese states without them.'

「六言六蔽」
六つの美徳も、一歩誤れば、六つの弊害をもたらすことになる。
仁:仁だけにこだわって、学問(教養)を怠れば、おろかな愛となる。
知:知識を鼻にかけるだけで、学問を怠れば、単なる物知り人間になる。
信:信義だけにこだわり、学問を怠れば、かえって人を傷つけることにな
  る。
直:率直なだけで、学問しなければ、融通がきかなくなる。
勇:勇気があるだけで、学問しなければ、秩序を乱す。
剛:剛強なだけで、学問しなければ、平常心を失う。

能行五者於天下、為仁矣
上に立つ者は、五つの徳を身につけることだ。それを実践することが仁である。
恭(きょう)なれば侮られず。(礼儀正しければ人々に敬われる。)
寛(かん)なれば衆を得。(寛大であれば人望が得られる。)
信(しん)なれば人任ず。(誠実だと人から頼りにされる。)
敏(びん)なれば功あり。(機敏であれば仕事がうまくいく。)
恵(けい)なればもって人を使うに足る。(思いやりがあれば人々は喜んでその命令に従うであろう。)
