Lunyu III. 9. (49)

The decay of the monuments of antiquity.
The Master said, "I could describe the ceremonies of the Hsiâ dynasty, but Chî cannot sufficiently attest my words. I could describe the ceremonies of the Yin dynasty, but Sung cannot sufficiently attest my words. (They cannot do so) because of the insufficiency of their records and wise men. If those were sufficient, I could adduce them in support of my words."

Legge III.9.

The Master said, 'I am able to discourse on the rites of the Hsia, but the state of Ch'i does not furnish sufficient supporting evidence; I am able to discourse on the rites of the Yin, but the state of Sung does not furnish sufficient supporting evidence. This is because there are not enough records and men of erudiction. Otherwise I would be able to support what I say with evidence.'

Lau [3:9]

all three words for "prove" should be zheng1, "prove; evidence." The first zheng1 is there by a sound-confusion, the two wei1 just look like the right word.
