XI. Only the sage man can come up to the requirements of the Mean.

Zhongyong XI. 1.


吾弗為之矣	後世有述焉	子曰素隱行怪

The Master said, "To live in obscurity, and yet practice wonders, in order to be mentioned with honor in future ages:– this is what I do not do.

Legge XI.1.

孔子说：“探求偏僻的主张，干那些诡怪的事情，纵是后代能传述下来，我是不干的。

白话翻译

Le Maître dit : "Vivre dans l'obscurité, et cependant accomplir des merveilles, afin d'être mentionné avec honneur par les âges futurs: c'est ce que je ne fais pas."

Zhongyong XI. 2.


吾弗能已矣	半塗而廢	君子遵道而行

"The good man tries to proceed according to the right path, but when he has gone halfway, he abandons it:– I am not able so to stop.

Legge XI.2.

君子遵循中庸之道前行，若在半路上便不再走了，我却是不能停止步伐的。

白话翻译

"L'homme de bien essaie d'agir en suivant la voir correcte, mais, quand il est à mi-chemin, il l'abandonne: je ne suis pas capable de m'arrêter."

唯聖者能之	遯世不見知而不悔	君子依乎中庸

"The superior man accords with the course of the Mean. Though he may be all unknown, unregarded by the world, he feels no regret.– It is only the sage who is able for this."

Legge XI.3.

君子依循中庸之道，即使隐循到山林中，不被人所知，也不后悔，这只是圣人能够这样。”

白话翻译

L'homme supérieur s'accorder avec la voie du Milieu. Bien qu'il puisse être inconnu, ignoré par le monde, il ne ressent aucun regret. Seul le sage est capable de cela.
