Confucius' text, Zengzi's comments on illustrious virtue, renovation of the people, the highest excellence, the root and the branches, investigation of things, having the thoughts sincere, the rectification of the mind, the regulation of the family, the well-ordering of the State, making the whole kingdom peaceful and happy.
Zengzi's Seventh Commentary
On personal cultivation as dependent on the rectification of the mind.
What is meant by, “The cultivation of the person depends on rectifying the mind” may be thus illustrated:— If a man be under the influence of passion, he will be incorrect in his conduct. He will be the same, if he is under the influence of terror, or under the influence of fond regard, or under that of sorrow and distress.
Legge VII. 1.
所说的修养自身,在于端正自己心志的道理:因为自身有所愤怒,心态(为其所累)就不可能端正;有所畏惧,也不可能端正;有所喜好快乐,也不可能端正;有所忧愁疑惑,也不可能端正。
白话翻译
Ces paroles : Se corriger soi-même de toutes passions vicieuses consiste à donner de la droiture à son âme, veulent dire : Si l'âme est troublée par la passion de la colère, alors elle ne peut obtenir cette droiture ; si l'âme est livrée à la crainte, alors elle ne peut obtenir cette droiture ; si l'âme est agitée par la passion de la joie et du plaisir, alors elle ne peut obtenir cette droiture ; si l'âme est accablée par la douleur, alors elle ne peut obtenir cette droiture.

Les paroles réformer sa personne en rectifiant son cœur s'entendent ainsi :
Celui qu'anime la rage de la haine n'est pas capable de rectitude.
Celui qu'anime le frisson de la peur n'est pas capable de rectitude.
Celui qu'anime l'exaltation du plaisir n'est pas capable de rectitude.
Celui qu'anime la souffrance et le malheur n'est pas capable de rectitude.
