Terrain

Only about a third of the chapter, comprising ss. ss. 1-13, deals with "terrain," the subject being more fully treated in ch. XI. The "six calamities" are discussed in SS. 14-20, and the rest of the chapter is again a mere string of desultory remarks, though not less interesting, perhaps, on that account.

Si votre armée et celle de l'ennemi sont à peu près en nombre égal et d'égale force, il faut que des dix parties des avantages du terrain vous en ayez neuf pour vous ; mettez toute votre application, employez tous vos efforts et toute votre industrie pour vous les procurer. Si vous les possédez, votre ennemi se trouvera réduit à n'oser se montrer devant vous et à prendre la fuite dès que vous paraîtrez. S'il est assez imprudent pour vouloir en venir à un combat, vous le combattrez avec l'avantage de dix contre un. Le contraire arrivera si, par négligence ou faute d'habileté, vous lui avez laissé le temps et les occasions de se procurer ce que vous n'avez pas.
