Terrain

Only about a third of the chapter, comprising ss. ss. 1-13, deals with "terrain," the subject being more fully treated in ch. XI. The "six calamities" are discussed in SS. 14-20, and the rest of the chapter is again a mere string of desultory remarks, though not less interesting, perhaps, on that account.

Sunzi X. 12.

When the higher officers are angry and insubordinate, and on meeting the enemy give battle on their own account from a feeling of resentment, before the commander-in-chief can tell whether or no he is in a position to fight, the result is RUIN.1

Si les officiers généraux sont faciles à s'enflammer, et s'ils ne savent ni dissimuler ni mettre un frein à leur colère, quel qu'en puisse être le sujet, ils s'engageront d'eux-mêmes dans des actions ou de petits combats dont ils ne se tireront pas avec honneur, parce qu'ils les auront commencés avec précipitation, et qu'ils n'en auront pas prévu les inconvénients et toutes les suites ; il arrivera même qu'ils agiront contre l'intention expresse du général, sous divers prétextes qu'ils tâcheront de rendre plausibles ; et d'une action particulière commencée étourdiment et contre toutes les règles, on en viendra à un combat général, dont tout l'avantage sera du côté de l'ennemi. Veillez sur de tels officiers, ne les éloignez jamais de vos côtés ; quelques grandes qualités qu'ils puissent avoir d'ailleurs, ils vous causeraient de grands préjudices, peut-être même la perte de votre armée entière.
