Things have their root and their branches. Affairs have their end and their beginning. To know what is first and what is last will lead near to what is taught in the Great Learning.

Les êtres de la nature ont une cause et des effets ; les actions humaines ont un principe et des conséquences ; connaître les causes et les effets, les principes et les conséquences, c'est approcher très-près de la méthode rationnelle avec laquelle on parvient à la perfection.
