Confucius required a real desire and ability in his disciples.
The Master said, "I do not open up the truth to one who is not eager to get knowledge, nor help out any one who is not anxious to explain himself. When I have presented one corner of a subject to any one, and he cannot from it learn the other three, I do not repeat my lesson."

Legge VII.8.

The Master said, 'I never enlighten anyone who has not been driven to distraction by trying to understand a difficulty or who has not got into a frenzy trying to put his ideas into words. 'When I have pointed out one corner of a square to anyone and he does not come back with the other three, I will not point it out to him a second time.'

Lau [7:8]

Le Maître dit : « Je n'enseigne pas celui qui ne s'efforce pas de comprendre ; je n'aide pas à parler celui qui ne s'efforce pas d'exprimer sa pensée. Si je soulève un angle [de la question] et que l'on est incapable de me retourner les trois autres, alors je n'y reviens pas. »

8. Nabi bersabda, "Kepada yang tidak mau bersungguh-sungguh, tidak perlu diberi petunjuk. Kepada yang tidak mau berterus terang, tidak perlu diberi nasehat. Kepada yang sudah diberi tahu tentang satu sudut, tetapi tidak mau berusaha mengetahui ke tiga sudut yang lain, tidak perlu diberi tahu lebih lanjut".
